Conflict and Glory

Since the profound transformations of the mid-19th century, Chinese art has journeyed through a century and a half of history, constantly moving between conflict and glory.

This ten-episode series takes the late Qing period as its point of departure, systematically tracing the evolution of Chinese art from tradition to modernity, from isolation to openness. It not only presents the shifts in artistic language and style, but also focuses on the artists’ destinies and choices amid social, political, and intellectual upheavals.

From the rise of the Shanghai School to the fervor of the May Fourth New Culture Movement; from the revolutionary art practices in Yan’an to the contemporary transformations after Reform and Opening — each chapter bears witness to Chinese art’s continual renewal and its resonance with the times.

New episodes will be released successively.
