The theme of the 2011 Chengdu Biennale is 'Changing Vistas: Creative Duration', and setting the contemporary art exhibition within the biennale is 'Pure Views' (in addition to the design exhibition 'Strategic Decisions' and the architecture exhibition 'Realms of Matter and Self'). Starting from this edition of the Chengdu Biennale, I have introduced the 'Special Invitational Exhibition' project, marking a significant step towards internationalization.
For the 'Special Invitational Exhibition' of this biennale, a total of sixteen art institutions and curators have been selected to organize, plan, and host exhibitions. The themes of these sectional exhibitions are diverse, with varying artistic forms and display methods. In many of sectional exhibitions, the emergence of young artists is evident, bringing a rich content and a notable level of challenge and experimentation to the 2011 Chengdu Biennale. This arrangement aims to maintain the continuous innovation and vitality of the Chengdu Biennale, imbuing the city with a stronger artistic spirit, while also providing the conditions and groundwork for nurturing new art and emerging artists.
The 2011 Chengdu Biennale is more open than previous editions. The organizers of the exhibition hope that the establishment of the 'Special Invitational Exhibition' in this edition will form a system, providing the groundwork and experience for the organization of similar exhibitions in the future.
