The exhibition, themed "HISTORICODE: Scarcity and Supply," does not attempt to advocate for a singular artistic direction but rather provides insights into the historical and contemporary issues related to art since the 1990s. As the chief curator, my role extends beyond expressing personal opinions through the exploration of "Examining Today's Historical Background" and "HISTORICODE." More importantly, it serves as a contemplative path for the exhibition jury and aspiring participating artists: What are the most pressing artistic issues of our time? How do we approach previous notions of "contemporary art" and historical elements related to contemporary art? What is the mission of art in today's context?
I do not conceal a particular viewpoint: for a considerable period, contemporary art has found itself in a state of lukewarmness—difficult to evoke positive responses and thoughts, rendering it seemingly devoid of meaning. People have almost lost the passion and curiosity for art as they had before the 1980s. Perhaps, humanity is once again altering its perception of art, akin to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
However, does the diversity of opinions substantiate the legitimacy of the apparent prosperity but substantive stagnation of contemporary art today? In the era of globalization where economic forces seemingly dictate everything, does the "abundance" of art also mask the absence of "spirituality"? Or do we need not use terms like "spirituality" when discussing art today? Not to mention exploring the fate of humanism and knowledge traditions that have supported human civilization since the Renaissance?
HISTORICODE involves value orientations and objectives, serving as the rationale for human continued existence and development. The use of economic terms "depression" and "supply" is merely an attempt to highlight existing issues and how to confront these challenges. In conclusion, the open interpretation of the exhibition theme can be summarized as follows: if the creation of history remains our task, identifying and analyzing contemporary issues faced by humanity while exploring constructive possibilities are the artistic motivations and themes that this exhibition seeks to convey.
