This book is a compilation of articles I have written since 1990, focusing on issues at the intersection of art and the market. In the 1990s, Chinese art underwent a comprehensive transition towards the market. Within this trajectory, I conceptualize purposeful cultural maneuvers as "art operations." I contend that art history, particularly contemporary art history, is shaped by the existence of certain facts—events that come into being because individuals engage in purposeful actions related to art within a defined set of rules, ultimately rendering those actions effective. Facts that emerge as a result of being "effective" constitute historical facts, and their interplay forms the structure of history.
Therefore, this book utilizes historical facts as case studies to expound, analyze, and propose historical issues concerning art in the process of development during the early stages of a market economy. Examples include the relationship between art and criticism, the interplay of art operations and the market, and the dynamics among various roles within art operations.
